World Editors Forum in Cape Town:

Focus on New, Quality Free Papers and Their Impact on Paid-For Titles

Free newspapers are everywhere, but most of them have little in common with traditional newspapers except for the paper they're printed on. Little news, few employees, no opinion.

But that is changing: the second generation of free dailies are competing oneditorial quality with paid newspapers, often with relatively large staffs. As one free newspaper editor put it, "the new free newspapers will reintroduce the newspaper as a broad medium that will be able to compete with television and the net on readership."

The new, quality free newspapers will be on display at the 14th World Editors Forum, which will devote a session to the editorial and commercial strengths and weaknesses of the new free papers - content-packed editions delivered to homes as well as picked up on public transport.

The World Editors Forum, which runs concurrently with the 60th World Newspaper Congress and Info Services Expo 2007, will be held from 3 to 6 June in Cape Town, South Africa. The events, the global meetings of theworld's press, are expected to draw 1,500 chief editors, publishers, managing directors and other senior newspaper executives.

Full details on the events, organised by the World Association of Newspapers and hosted by the Newspaper Association of South Africa, are available at
http://www.wan-press.org/capetown2007

The World Editors Forum session on free newspapers -- not only general interest dailies, but sports and economic titles -- will feature two editors from Denmark, where a free daily "war" has broken out among seven titles, which are delivering copies to homes, street corners and public transport.

The catalyst for the free newspaper war was the announcement by the Icelandic group Dagsbrun last year that it would launch a quality free dailynewspaper in Denmark and deliver it directly to 500,000 households. Denmark's newspaper companies responded by launching their own home delivered dailies, beating the newcomer to market. The newcomers, combined with the paid-for dailies, now provide 2 million daily copies for a total population of 5 million Danes.

Speakers in the session include Toger Seidenfaden, Editor-in-chief of Politiken, will give his views from the perspective of a paid-for newspaper editor. He will be joined by David Trads, Editor-in-chief of the free quality daily Nyhedavisen, and former editor of the Danish Metro. As editor of both a first generation and second generation free daily, Mr Trads is uniquely qualified to address the evolution of the free daily phenomenon.

Also in the session is Ben Rogmans, Co-founder of Dagblad De Pers in TheNetherlands, one of the first quality free dailies in the world. He sees free dailies as the future of general interest newspapers, with paid-forpapers becoming specialised and niche publications of high quality.

Here are a few of the other speakers on the three-day WEF programme:

- Pana Janviroj, President of Thailand's leading English-language newspaper, The Nation, and Executive Director of Asia News Network, a cooperative news initiative among some of Asia's leading newspapers. He will take part in asession entitled, "Sharing Best Practices: Five Examples of Newspaper Cooperation."

- Grzegorz Piechota, Special Projects Editor for Gazeta Wyborcza, the largest quality daily newspaper in Poland. Mr Piechota develops and runs multimedia projects that involved editorial, marketing and research teams. He will discuss reader collaboration through print and online, helping both platforms to reach new audiences.

- Birgit Donker, Editor-in-Chief of NRC Handelsblad and nrc.next in TheNetherlands, who worked her way up from trainee to chief editor of two newspapers that share a common newsroom. NRC Handelsblad is a traditional newspaper, while nrc.next is a new, successful, paid-for newspaper for younger readers. Ms Donker will talk about how she manages a multi-newspaper newsroom -- a growing trend as editorial resources diminish in many markets.

- Rebecca MacKinnon, Co-founder of Global Voices Online and a new media journalism professor at the University of Hong Kong. Ms MacKinnon, who worked for CNN in Northeast Asia for over a decade, including at Beijing andTokyo Bureau Chiefs, will explain the success of Global Voices, anaward-winning citizen media website that "amplifies" voices from the developing world.

- Dave Panos, a pioneer in social media technologies who created BlogBurst, the media industry's first blog syndication service. Mr Panos, now CEO andco-founder of the social media company Pluck in the United States, will examine the impact of inviting users to participate in the editorial processand provide lessons from participatory media initiatives at national and metropolitan newspapers in the USA.

- Don Wittekind, a journalism professor at the Poynter Institute who, as a newspaper graphics director at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel led the creation of the first newspaper-based multimedia graphic department. Hewill examine how internet design trends are influencing the designs of newspapers in print.

CLEARWATER, FL / PR FREE / Feb 12 2007 – Ezo, LLC. ('www.thecreditmagazine.com) The Credit Magazine is your trusted source on helping with credit issues specifically created for consumers with a low credit score. The Credit Magazine was created to help the below average consumer learn how to enhance their credit score, life style and the life of there family.
The Credit magazine is aware of the unethical business practices of a large sum of the “Credit Repair Industry”. Companies ready to pull the wool over your eyes, take your money and leave you empty handed and confused. “Our magazine will put you in touch with reputable creditors that will help you with your credit, not make it worse” stated Chad Elie, company founder. “There are countless scams used against the consumers with bad credit or no credit, it’s about time they have a trusted source to go to.”
Become the decider of the fate of your life and the life of your credit through thecreditmagazine.com.
The Credit Magazine works on the consumer’s behalf by putting them in touch with pre-screened creditors, whose whole goal is to help the consumer obtain and build their credit. The Credit Magazine’s main goals and interests are geared specifically towards customers who need help with their Bad or No credit situation.“
Through research and experience we have discovered the trials and tribulations for consumers in the bracket of bad or no credit.” Stated Chad Elie. “When my mother was divorced, she had to go from bank to bank taking time off of work just to start her credit back on track. It’s a hard thing to do, especially with so many scams out there and no easily obtainable knowledge of how to clean up your own credit rating. This was one of the many reasons of developing Thecreditmagazine.com.”
We are aware of the problems of finding honest professionals who will not take advantage of consumer’s position. “When your credit is not in its best standing often getting a simple loan can be an overwhelming task with expensive repercussions.” stated Elie. The Credit Magazine takes specific precautions to make sure our advertisers share our same passion to help get the consumer’s credit back in good standing “.Our goals are to inform you of the best rates, solutions and deals to enhance your life style and credit score.” Stated Chad Elie.

When asked why anyone would want to use The Credit Magazine Elie responded, “There are hundreds of thousands of websites and junk mail sent to these consumer’s daily. Would you trust that? Would you trust a piece of mail that says you‘re guaranteed approval .Just send in a check. I’ve seen far too many of these companies out there and they keep on scamming the consumer and emptying their pockets and banking accounts. These are the consumers that need our help. That is why they can rely on the only magazine created specifically for this particular customer.”

When asked,” How do consumer’s find out about the scams to avoid?” Elie concluded, “A lot of times you are notified only if you have already been scammed. In some cases sent a class action suit from which you’re lucky to get a $5.00 reimbursement .That is why the last four pages of our magazine teach you what to look out for. TCM publishes the scams that are out there. We are dedicated to informing the consumer’s of their rights and we sincerely want to help them get their credit out of its poor state, not drag them through the mud.”
Our efforts are meant for consumers to obtain good or better credit. In order to enjoy all that good credit has to offer.
