Developing Print and Digital Media Together
Paris, 27 February, 2006--The mantra from digital publishing advocates at the World Newspaper Advertising Conference & Expo was that newspaper companies must rapidly move their business on-line or risk getting left behind.Ironically, those same advocates provided one of the strongest arguments for staying in, and developing, the print business -- newspapers generate much more revenue per reader than on-line media, and will continue to do so for some time to come.On-line advertising revenues are rising dramatically -- they were more than 17 billion dollars in the United States last year, with 4 billion going to newspapers, according to Vin Crosbie of Borrell Associates. But on-line media produce 20 to 100 times less revenue per reader than newspapers do, he said. To put it another way, for every print reader lost, newspapers have to replace them with between 20 and 100 website readers to gain the same revenue."We need to make the revenues we earn from on-line readers equal or more than what we earned from the people who no longer read us in print," said Mr Crosbie, who conceded this was an enormous task.Other speakers echoed Mr Crosbie, particularly when it comes to classified advertising. Jim Chisholm, Strategy Advisor to the World Association of Newspapers, said the movement of classified advertising from print to on-line was accelerating rapidly worldwide."We are seeing fantastic growth in on-line classifieds, but it is not enough to make up for the money lost from print classifieds," said Mr Chisholm, who directs the Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project, which has been tracking the migration of classified advertisements from print to on-line for the past three years. While there is no doubt that newspapers must develop their on-line operations -- and much of the conference was devoted to these strategies, and how successful companies implement them -- others see value in building the print franchise.Take the Arizona Republic, a Gannett publication which is following an "audience aggregation" strategy that calls for aggressive expansion of both print and on-line products. The flagship newspaper is complemented with new supplements, niche and community newspapers and magazines, both free and paid, as well as an array of on-line products, to reach many different segments of the market."This is a powerful approach to building total audience, building audience difficult to reach with our core newspaper, but it does not diminish our commitment to producing the finest daily newspapers possible, nor does it diminish our efforts to continue to actively support and grow readership of the daily product," said Publisher John Zidich.Newspaper executives must also guard against overreacting to anecdotal information that tends to exaggerate the impact of the internet on newspaper operations, said Gavin O'Reilly, Chief Operating Officer of Dublin-based Independent News & Media and President of the World Association of Newspapers.Mr O'Reilly urged participants -- a record 480 from 75 countries -- to check the facts and reject the myths that are fuelling belief that the internet is threatening newspapers."There is not a shred of empirical evidence, here or in the USA, or in Scandinavia, or the Far East, to confirm that the internet per se is damaging newspaper circulations," he said. "Indeed, a recent study by WAN demonstrated that those newspapers with strong web activities were actually the ones that were showing circulation growth."As audience and effectiveness research becomes more sophisticated, there is a growing understanding that the attributes and unique qualities of print cannot be duplicated by other media. Delegates at the conference were treated to several presentations that demonstrated that advertisers should look beyond just circulation and readership for the value that newspapers provide. For example, studies in France show that newspapers are far superior to other media in terms of the quality of their audience, the loyalty they demonstrate to the paper, their acceptance of advertising messages and other attributes."This is not a French exception. It is the same elsewhere for print media," said Luciano Bosio, Managing Director for Marketing, Research and Strategy for Publiprint.Summaries of all presentations at the conference, held last week in Paris and organized by WAN, can be found at http://www.wan-press.org/paris2006/Upcoming: The 59th World Newspaper Congress, 13th World Editors Forum and Info Services Expo 2006, the global meetings of the world's press, to be held in Moscow, Russia from 4 to 7 June next. World's Press, News Agencies, Regret FIFA's Withdrawal From World Cup Talks
Paris, 23 February 2006--The World Association of Newspapers and a coalition of the world's leading news agencies today expressed their 'dismay' and 'deep regret' about the decision of FIFA, the international, soccer federation, to abandon talks about the severe restrictions the organization has placed on press coverage of this summer's World Cup, despite the continuing disagreement between the two sides.WAN, representing the world's newspapers, and a coalition of news agencies headed by Agence France-Presse and including The Associated Press, Reuters, Getty Images, DPA the German news agency - and the European PressPhoto Agency, EPA, said they would now explore their legal options, inform World Cup sponsors of "the very clear loss of exposure from which they will suffer owing to FIFA's publishing restrictions" and alert German and European political leaders about what they consider a violation of conventions on the free access to and free flow of information. The restrictions "constitute both an interference in editorial freedom and independence and a clear breach of the right to freedom of information", WAN Chief Executive Officer Timothy Balding and AFP President and CEO Pierre Louette said in a letter to FIFA President Sepp Blatter.FIFA has banned publication of World Cup photos through the Internet, including on thousands of newspaper web sites, during matches and has severely limited the number that can be published, regardless of time limits. It has also introduced editorial restrictions on how photographs can be used in print publicationsThe restrictions are imposed as a condition of access to the World Cup and news media are obliged to accept them before gaining accreditation to the events, to be held in Germany in June. News media face expulsion and legal action if the rules are broken -- and FIFA holds news agencies responsible if their clients break the embargo or publish too many photos.WAN has been negotiating with FIFA to remove the restrictions since September 2005, and met with Mr Blatter and the federation's lawyers and other representatives on 9 January, when the two sides agreed to create a joint working party to seek solutions. But a few days after the first meeting of the working group on 13 February, at which FIFA made no more than 'cosmetic' changes to the rules, the football federation sent a 'final version' of the terms and conditions that continue to ignore the fundamental objections of WAN and the news agencies."We are greatly dissatisfied by both the substance of FIFA's response to our case and, frankly, by the manner in which your team has presented your proposals and conclusions to us," said the letter to Mr Blatter."We would like to reiterate our firm belief that your restrictions on our journalistic coverage of the 2006 World Cup not only deprive our readers and clients of access to important information on a public event, but constitute both an interference in editorial freedom and independence and a clear breach of the right to freedom of information as protected by numerous international conventions," said the letter. "You have made it clear that FIFA rejects both these ideas and, to express is bluntly, considers that 'business is business.'"Beyond this, we are truly saddened and shocked that in the name of maximising the commercial exploitation of these events, FIFA should effectively turn its back on the news media which give life, on a daily basis, to football in all its different manifestations all over the world and have done so for decades."FIFA had originally decreed that web publication of photos was banned for two hours after a match ended. Since the talks began, they have reduced this first to one hour, then to permission that first-half photos can be published as soon as a match ends, with second-half photos allowed 45 minutes later, and finally to publication at the final whistle but never during matches. Only five photos per match half and two per extra time, including penalty 'shoot-outs', can be published on web sites, regardless of time limits, and FIFA has refused to alter this rule.FIFA says it needs the delay and the limit on photos to protect its commercial contracts with licensees but WAN and the news agencies argue that, apart from anything else, the rules are needless as web coverage does not threaten broadcasters.

Format Change Yields Advertising, Loyalty Results
Paris, 22 February, 2006--Newspaper readers like smaller formats. And while the large circulation increases reported by downsized newspapers tend to disappear over time, those newspapers that utilize format change as part of a wider commercial strategy can see gains in reader loyalty and advertising yield.³Format change was never going to be a panacea. but it is proving to be a worthwhile move, in terms of raising reader satisfaction and providing a foundation for other editorial and commercial developments,² said Jim Chisholm, Strategy Advisor to the World Association of Newspapers, speaking to an audience of senior American newspaper executives on Wednesday.Among those newspapers that aggressively promote the change, circulation patterns are remarkably consistent. Shortly after the smaller editions are launched, circulations rise between 10 percent and 15 percent. But after a year, few titles are showing circulation gains. ³The end result is, at best, a one percent growth, or for many, stable sales. Many publishers, having been faced with declines, regard this as success enough for their efforts,² said Mr Chisholm. Mr Chisholm, who directs the WAN Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project, has long cautioned that the rush to reduce the newspaper¹s size was unlikely to provide a dramatic turnaround in a newspaper¹s fortunes. The SFN project has been tracking format change; in the last two years, more than 80 major titles have undertaken a transformation either from broadsheet to tabloid or to the mid-sized Berliner format."What is encouraging is the bi-products of the activity,² said Mr Chisholm. For example, one newspaper in Sweden invited readers to use their mobile telephones to order free subscription trials of the new tabloid version: 40,000 people took up the offer and 10,000 subsequently subscribed. Most significant is the number of publishers who have reported that the greatest value was the encouragement of innovation in the newsroom."As one publisher said: 'It's not enough to only change the format, readers expect the newspaper to be new, so the content needs to be refreshing as well,'" Mr Chisholm recounted. "Changing your format does not solve everything, you also have to take the editorial content into consideration to satisfy your readers and advertisers."This view was also true in the advertising department, where training on price maintenance and demonstration of value, regardless of size, was seen as essential. Many newspapers chose the format change as the time to move from column centimetre-based pricing to fixed-size, modular pricing. This has proved to be very successful, with publishers able to retain prices, while newsprint consumption has fallen.Research shows that a tabloid page advertisement is equally as effective as a broadsheet page. Speaking at the Newspaper Association of America conference in Orlando, Florida, Mr Chisholm concluded: ³On balance, smaller formats are a good idea. Readers undoubtedly prefer them, and any notion that size somehow is a badge of quality or status is demonstrably a myth. While few newspapers are showing material circulation benefits, the anticipated problems in advertising yields and prices have been overcome, and many newspapers are benefiting from improvements in content, and reduced costs.²The Paris-based World Association of Newspapers, the global organisation for the newspaper industry represents 18,000 newspapers; its membership includes 72 national newspaper associations, newspaper companies and individual newspaper executives in 101 countries, 13 news agencies and nine regional and world-wide press groups.WAN is a leading provider of industry research and analysis through its Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project, which identifies, analyses and publicises all important breakthroughs and opportunities that can benefit newspapers all over the world. SFN provides WAN members with Strategy Reports on these developments, a library of case studies and business ideas, and a wealth of other vital information for all those who need to follow press industry trends. More on the project can be found at http://www.futureofthenewspaper.com.Mr Chisholm is scheduled to speak at the WAN World Newspaper Advertising Conference & Expo in Paris on Friday: full conference details at http://www.wan-press.org/paris2006WAN conducts the SFN project with support from five international partners -- PubliGroupe, the Swiss-based international advertising and promotion group; MAN Roland, a leading company for newspaper production systems; UPM, one of the world's leading printing paper producers; Telenor, the leading Norwegian telecommunications, IT and media group; and Samsung Electronics, a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, and digital convergence technology. World's Press Protest Arrests, Closures Over Mohamet Cartoons
The World Association of Newspapers and World Editors Forum have protested against a wave of repressive action against editors and other journalists in Arab and Muslim countries who have published the cartoons of Mohamet at the centre of the current controversy. In letters to the governments of Algeria, Yemen, Malaysia and Jordan, together with that of Russia, the Paris-based WAN and WEF have called for the release of jailed journalists and the reopening of banned publications.
The organizations said that governments should not interfere with editorial decisions and that the arrests and closures violated the right to freedom of expression."While appreciating that the cartoons have caused offence to many Muslims, we respectfully remind you that the decision as to whether or not to publish such material is an editorial decision and not one with which the State should interfere," said the letters. In Algeria, Kamel Bousaad, Director of the weekly Panorama and Berkane Bouderbala, Director of the weekly Essafir were arrested, and their publications closed, after they printed the cartoons that were first published in Denmark.
In Yemen, the Editor-in-Chief of the Yemen Observer, Mohammad al-Asaadi, and two journalists from al-Hurriya -- the Managing Editor, Abd al-Karim Sabra and a reporter, Yehiya al-Abed -- were jailed. An arrest warrant has been issued for Kamal al-Aalafi, the editor-in-chief of al-Rai al-Aam. The publishing licenses of all three newspapers have been revoked. In Malaysia, the government closed the regional daily Sarawak Tribune for publishing the cartoons on 4 February and declared it an offence for anyone to publish, produce, import, circulate or possess the caricatures. In Russia, authorities in Volgograd closed Volgograd-Info after the Gorodski Vesti newspaper published a cartoon in which caricatures of Christ, Moses, Buddha and Mohammad were featured. The four religious figures were seated in front of a television set that showed two groups of men about to fight. "We never taught them that!" the caption read.
WAN and the WEF had earlier protested to the Jordanian government against the jailings of Editors Jihad Momani of the weekly Shihan and Hisham Khalidi of al-Mehwar, for re-publishing the cartoons. The editors have subsequently been released on bail.Read the full letters at http://www.wan-press.org/article9285.htmlThe Paris-based WAN, the global organisation for the newspaper industry, defends and promotes press freedom world-wide. It represents 18,000 newspapers; its membership includes 73 national newspaper associations, newspapers and newspaper executives in 102 countries, 11 news agencies and nine regional and world-wide press groups. The WEF is the organisation for editors within the World Association of Newspapers (http://www.worldeditorsforum.org).Inquiries to: Larry Kilman, Director of Communications, WAN, 7 rue Geoffroy St Hilaire, 75005 Paris France. Getting the Most Out of Newspaper Advertisements
Paris, 14 February 2006 -- The ability of broadcast and digital media to measure advertising effectiveness is putting pressure on newspapers to better demonstrate the value of newspaper advertising. The World Newspaper Advertising Conference & Expo, to be held in Paris next week, will examine innovative ways to demonstrate advertising success.
The conference, on 23 and 24 February, will include a session entitled, "What's an ad worth, to us and to the advertiser?" that will focus on several issues: how agencies measure advertising success; new pricing developments; and how to test advertisements using web panels.
More than 400 publishers and newspaper advertising directors from 70 countries are registered for the "Revenue Generation 2006" conference, organised by the World Association of Newspapers. There is still time to register; full conference details can be found at http://www.wan-press.org/paris2006Speakers in the session on advertising value include: Vibeke Buine, CRM and Analyst Manager for Bonnier Publications, and Soren Langgard, Partner in Peytz & Co in Denmark, who have been testing advertisements with web panels; Leonard Kubas, President of Kubas Consultants in Canada, who will address pricing developments; and Luciano Bosio, Marketing Director, Research and Strategy, for Publiprint, and Bruno Smutz, Director of Interdeco Expert in France, who will examine how agencies measure advertising success and how newspapers can help them sell newspaper advertising to their clients.
Other presentations include:- A keynote speech on "The very bright future for newspapers in a digital world," by Gavin O'Reilly, President of the World Association of Newspapers and Chief Operating Officer of Independent News & Media.
- A presentation on how The Arizona Republic is leveraging its brand to create additional revenues, more market share and better value for advertisers, by John Zidich, the Publisher of the paper.
- An examination of a successful advertising revenue generation programme in the United Kingdom, by Lorraine Cane, Advertising Director of the Bristol Evening Post, and David Barker, Business Development Manager for New Revenue Solutions.
- A look at how newspapers are creating better value for advertisers in Russia, by Aleksander Strakhov, Deputy General Director of Komsomolskaya Pravda.
- Case studies from several US media companies whose online advertising programmes are now generating close to 10 percent of print revenues, presented by Martha Stone, Manager of Special Projects for the Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project of the World Association of Newspapers.
- A session on creative awards and how they can increase advertising sales, featuring awards programmes from the United Kingdom, the United States and Brazil. Speakers include Robert Ray, Marketing Director of the Newspaper Society in the UK, Geraldo Leite, Advertising Committee Director of the Brazilian Association of Newspapers, and Mort Goldstrom, Vice President (Advertising) for the Newspaper Association of America.
- A presentation on trends in on-line revenues and the implications for newspapers, by Vin Crosbie, Senior Associate, Borrell Associated in the United States.
- An examination of the revolution in classified advertising featuring Michel van der Meer, Managing Director of Speurders.nl, the classified advertisement web site of the Telegraaf in The Netherlands, and Jim Chisholm, Strategy Advisor for the World Association of Newspapers, who will present a report on classified trends and the opportunities for newspapers.
- A session on best practices in sales training, featuring Svitlana Shevchuk, Vice President of RIA Media Corporation in Ukraine, Graham Barr, Director of Power of the Press Workshops, and Eamonn Byrne, Business Director of WAN.
