GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It's a journalist's job to ask questions, but they're usually aimed at outsiders. At the News & Record, a 93,000-daily circulation newspaper in Greensboro, reporters and editors are asking tough questions about the paper itself. The biggest questions: If the paper needs to change to survive, what changes should be made? What can it do, especially online, to make itself the electronic equivalent of a town square?

3/28/05 - 2004's Best-/Worst-Selling Covers (Monthlies/Bimonthlies):
Legacy of the late 19th-century British scientist Charles Darwin, whose "theory of evolution" overcame one major challenge in the 20th century--the 1925 Scopes Trial--apparently will have a tough go in the 21st. Rise in religious fundamentalism (in all faiths) has been accompanied by the growing support of teaching creationism in the schools. That, of course, was not the crux of National Geographic asking Was Darwin Wrong? last November. As it has been in NG since its launch in 1888 (six years after Darwin's death), the arguments over evolution were purely scientific. But the controversy helped make this plain-looking cover (right) NG's best-selling for 2004.

3/25/05 - Farewell to Newspapers:
March 24, 2005 -- Does anybody read newspapers anymore? And if so, why? There was a time, just three years ago, when I got three newspapers each morning. Living in Silicon Valley, I, of course, subscribed to the San Jose Mercury News. I bought it for the business stories, the movie listings and neighborhood news. Having once worked for the paper, there was a nostalgia factor as well.

3/25/05 - Media Post's Magazine Rack: The Atlantic Monthly:
READING THE ATLANTIC Monthly is a rigorous intellectual exercise. The magazine's blocky, graphics-lite design doesn't exactly encourage casual perusal; its long, involved stories demand the reader's undivided attention. This ain't toilet-reading material, unless you've got a medical condition that, uh, detains you for extended stretches.

3/25/05 - The CPM Disparity:
NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE'S RATE CARD LISTS an open rate of $231,000 for a page four-color bleed. Based on their rate base of 3,100,000 the cost per thousand readers reached (CPM) is $74.52. The published rate card for Newsweek.com however, does not list any rates. Sports Illustrated publishes an open rate of $279,450 and a rate base of 3,150,000. This equates to a CPM of $88.71. The published rate card for SI.com does not list any rates. People magazine reports an open rate of $216,200 for a page four-color bleed. At a rate base of 3,350,000, the magazine delivers a CPM of $64.54. The rate card for People.com however, fails to deliver any rates. Three of the most well known magazines in the media industry are keeping their rates to advertise online a secret. That is because the big secret in online advertising is that there are no rates. By no rates, I mean there is no official cost per entry to run advertising online with these world wide established content brands.

3/24/05 - Beverly Hills: Come Hither, All Tourists:
Beverly Hills' image as a star-studded stomping ground for the world's most glamorous socialites--and the tourists who want to be around them-- doesn't seem to need much of a polish. But the Beverly Hills Conference and Visitors Bureau wants tourists to do more than windowshop on Rodeo Drive; it wants them to book off-season overnight stays at the city's tony hotels and reserve tables at its gourmet restaurants. That's the objective of a $2 million campaign from independent M&C Saatchi in Santa Monica, Calif., that launches this week. Print work attempts to seduce potential visitors by personifying the city as a romantic, sophisticated young woman. One full-page ad that breaks in April magazines including Travel + Leisure and Food & Wine depicts a woman wearing a glamorous, lace-up-the-back gown (on loan from Beverly Hills' Barneys), gazing through a picture window. "Is it shopping or sightseeing?" asks seemingly hand-scripted text. Like an intimate note, smaller writing reads, "There's lots more I'd like to show you. Love, Beverly Hills."
