1/31/05 - Time Out magazine publisher hopes to break even in two years:
About six months ago, Mumbai saw the launch of a fortnightly magazine called Time Out that aimed at providing information about the city, mapping the arts, culture and entertainment scene apart from providing listings, reviews, dope on eating joints, shopping havens and so on. The objective was to be a one-point source of information, which is otherwise dispersed across the city pages of newspapers, magazines or guides. The target audience was the reader keen on having fun, and above all, “willing to spend”.

1/31/05 - An Online Rescue for Newpapers?:
Not so long ago -- three or four years -- online operations were a business afterthought at newspapers. Revenues from the sites were tiny, one percent or less of the total. Plus almost none were profitable. So online was a kind of placeholder, learning-curve venture for the uncertain digital future. Since then circulation and readership have continued to decline, and the industry has experienced an ad crash, followed by a disappointing recovery. Online has been the bright spot in this otherwise dreary picture, recording successive years of 30 to 40 percent growth and going into the black at most mid-sized and large papers.

"We were not surprised," John Sturm, CEO of the Newspaper Association of America, told E&P. 1/26/05 - Belo localizes interactive division in bid to recapture classifieds:
The newspaper industry's traditional stranglehold on the classified advertising business is slipping, slowly but surely, like an aging, myopic dragon that's losing treasure each day from its hoard. In this case, the nimble knights making off with the booty are upstarts such as Monster, eBay and that rascally do-gooder Craigslist. So what's an old-line media company like Belo Corp. to do? The owner of the Dallas Morning News, Providence Journal, KING-TV in Seattle and various other newspapers and local TV outlets decided it was time to implode Belo Interactive (BI) as a wholly owned subsidiary that ran all its Web properties and just make it an interactive division. The division will retain some central functions (technology platform, national ad sales) at HQ in Dallas, while integrating Net operations at each offline media outlet.

1/25/05 - Bull Riding and Cancer Treatment:
It is not difficult to guess which types of marketers would want to sponsor the sport of professional bull riding. Yes, in a new wrinkle in sports marketing, the Theragenics Corporation, which makes TheraSeed, a device that can be used in the treatment of prostate cancer, is expanding a sponsorship agreement with Professional Bull Riders, which is based in Colorado Springs, Colo. The agreement, which was tested last fall in San Antonio, Tex., is being rolled out in 2005 to six to nine major markets. The sponsorship, which is costing Theragenics about $2.5 million, includes television, radio and print advertising; ... The six markets that will start to see the campaign this year, Ms. Jacobs says, are: Anaheim, Calif.; Dallas; Las Vegas; Oklahoma City; Phoenix; and Seattle/Tacoma. It may also be expanded into three other markets, she adds, which are Colorado Springs, Memphis and St. Louis.ny times 'in advertising' by stuart elliot (subscription)
